Aztec Tradition on Colorful Display for Children's Day

Boys and girls from the Family Resource Center at Iglesia Park in Aliso Viejo were treated to a little culture and heritage entertainment Monday afternoon in celebration of El Dia de los Ninos, or "The Day of the Children."

The second year of the festive event drew about 125 people, up from just under 100 least year

The ancient traditions of the Aztec people were on full display for the kids and their families as the colorful dance troupe Danza Azteca Xochipilli told a story in both song and dance of the Aztec people.

They five-member group, four of whom are family members, performed a dance routine then introduced the names of their instruments and how they could be combined to form similar sounds used to communicate to far distances.

Children then had an opportunity to performed with the group in their native dance. Afterwards they listened to a story told by Leslie V. Ryan, the author of "I am Flippish!" and some received signed copies. There also were arts and crafts tables for the kids to make Aztec artifacts.

The program was presented by the Aliso Viejo Library and the City of Aliso Viejo Family Resource Center.

"It was nice to see the neighborhood come out and everybody join together," said Gracie Duran, manager at the Family Resource Center. "It's the day of the books, the day of the children, so it's a day about learning to read."
