Going to the Dogs? Add a Rescue to Your Family!

Puppies aren't products.  But they are awesome buddies.

Pet stores that sell dogs have a deserved reputation for obtaining these animals from puppy mills.  Only through consumer education is this going to stop.

My wife and I adopted our toy poodle from a no kill shelter.  She was a wreck but who wouldn't be after a week in jail?  Now she is our baby.  No kill shelters are one place to find a new member to add to your family, but there are many options.

Petsmart is known for not selling dogs and cats.  Instead, they encourage adoption and allow dog rescues access to the front of their store.  They also have cats for adoption, but I think cats adopt you and not the other way around.

I joined a dog rescue called Heart Bandits this past Sunday at the Petsmart in the Aliso Viejo Town Center to help find homes for the dogs in their care.  Only through adoption can we end the senseless killing of unwanted dogs and cats.  Critters In Need Dog Rescue was also on site with dogs for adoption.  Both rescues are Sunday regulars in front of Petsmart with adoptable doggies.

A Chihuahua named Delilah is just one of the dogs looking for a home.

With a little love and a small adoption fee you can save a life and help your family go to the dogs too.

My family has always believed in rescuing the dogs and cats we add to our family. We gained many best friends that way.

Our family has rescued two dogs from Critters in Need Dog Rescue, one in 2008 and one in 2009. Our daughter Charlotte loves to go visit all the dogs waiting to be adopted by families at the PetSmart here in Aliso Viejo. Unfortunately we lost one of our rescues at Christmas because she was an older dog, Kona was just the best dog. Rescues are the way to go.

Heather, I'm sorry to hear about Kona. I'm sure you made her final years extremely happy. Rescues are definitely the way to go!

Kudos to PetSmart for encouraging adoptions and accommodating animal rescue groups. A bright light entered my life when I adopted a sweet German Shepherd from Coastal German Shepherd Rescue.

They often hold pet adoption fairs on weekends in the parking lot in front of the Aliso Viejo PetSmart. They also do amazing work with abandoned, neglected, injured, and other Shepherds in need of a loving home.

Here's my ode to my rescue "puppy." Oh, does he have me wrapped around his big, fat, white, shedding-to-no-end paw! http://sanjuancapistrano.patch.com/articles/lessons-learned-from-professor-lobo
