Let's All Go to the Movies ...

How to enjoy the movies on a budget.

It’s time for a quiz, Aliso Weekender readers!

What was my 4-year-old son doing last weekend when he shouted, “Mama, quick!  Mama, come here!  It’s coming right at me!”?

A. Panicking as a bee flew into our car.

B.  Watching a hockey game.

C.  Enjoying a 3-D movie.

The answer is C:  My son was experiencing his first 3-D movie and was convinced that he was wearing a pair of “magic” glasses.  Forget the fact that we were all wearing the same glasses; it still took a few minutes to reassure my son that we were able to see the same 3-D images.  Watching my son’s excitement was definitely worth the $16 we spent on the movie tickets.

Yes, you read that right.  Taking my family of four to a 3-D movie cost a total of $16. How amazing is that?  If you are looking for a fun and budget-friendly activity for the weekend, make sure to add a visit to the Starplex Cinemas (Woodbridge Dollar Movies 5) to your calendar.

Located in the Woodbridge Village Center in Irvine, the Starplex Cinemas is only a 15-minute drive from Aliso Viejo.  Even after factoring in the cost of gas these days (crazy, right?), this dollar theater is a serious bargain.  Since we decided to watch a 3-D movie we paid $4 a ticket, but all other movies are only $2 a ticket.  If you happen to head to the movies on a Tuesday, tickets are only $1 each or $3 each if you choose a 3-D movie .  I love a great deal!

The Starplex Cinemas does not show the latest cinematic releases. However, it does show recent movies. We enjoyed Gnomeo & Juliet, and I found myself laughing quite a bit during the movie.  Of course, some of my laughter may have been caused by my latest case of “overtired loopy mom” syndrome.

Memo to my children:  If you plan to wake up in the middle of the night, can you make it before 4 a.m.?  Any later than that and I have a hard time falling back to sleep.  Thanks, and much love, Mom.

The theater itself is not as nice as our Regal Cinema in Aliso Viejo, but my family did not seem to mind.  The only issue we had was with the older theater seats that kept folding up on my 4-year-old son. I must admit, we did enjoy a few minutes of pre-movie entertainment as my son kept trying to find a way to sit on the chair without being folded up like a taco.  My husband rescued my son by offering a seat on his lap.

After the movie, my family agreed that a trip to the Starplex Cinemas will definitely be in our near future.  My 8-year-old daughter is already trying to convince us that we should make a trip next weekend to see Justin Bieber:  Never Say Never in 3-D.  Since I was the one to take my daughter to see that movie in 2-D, that should clearly excuse me from taking her to see it in 3-D … right?  Perhaps I should suggest a father/daughter date night.

You can check out the Starplex Cinemas website for movie listings and times.
