Mommy Moments

Finding humor in every day life as a mom and wife.

I have kept a journal on my nightstand for the last 10 years. On most days, I write about the joys and frustrations of being a wife and mommy.  I even have a special section reserved for the funny things my children say during the day.  This past month my journal has been filled to the brim with classic mommy/wife moments.  Here are a few of my favorites.  Please feel free to relate, commiserate or laugh at my expense.

My 'Just Try and Let It Go' Moment

A few days ago I grabbed a mug from our kitchen cabinet.  Right before I poured my coffee, I noticed that the bottom of the mug was covered with dried coffee grounds.  I know that our dishwasher is not the best in the world, but it would have been nice if my husband had noticed he was putting away a dirty dish.  I took a deep breath, snapped a photo of the dirty mug, then sent it to my girlfriend with the caption, “Really?  Does he think this mug is clean?”   After that one little grumble, I felt much better.  Now I’m just trying to focus on the fact that I have a husband who helps around the house.

Bad Mommy Moment

After a late-night party at our house, I tucked my exhausted daughter into bed.  Before I left her room I asked, “Did you have a great time?”  She replied, “I had a great time.  I ate chips and salsa for dinner!”  Wow, not my finest mommy moment.  Note to self:  Feed kids dinner before party guests arrive.

Rock Star Mommy Moment

I surprised the kids this week with a trip to Baskin-Robbins in the Aliso Viejo Plaza.  We were celebrating no cavities at the dentist office.  Trust me, I totally get that there are better ways to celebrate healthy teeth than eating sugar.  But the smiles and sticky hugs I received after we ate our ice cream cones … priceless.

Zen Mommy Moment

I walked out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around my hair, a ratty T-shirt on and some shorts that truly belong in another decade.  My 4-year-old son, who was hanging out on my bed, looked up and said, “Oh, Mama!  You’re so beautiful!”  Insert plenty of goose bumps and a melted heart.  I am so in love with my little guy!

Proud Mommy Moment

This summer I have been spending plenty of time at the Pacific Ballet Conservatory in Aliso Viejo.  And by “plenty of time,” I mean an absurd amount of time.  But watching my daughter work hard at something she loves makes the time I spend at the dance studio worth it.  I am definitely a proud mama.

'Well, That’s One for the Baby Book' Moment

I walked into our family room just in time to hear my son read his first word, “Muh-muh-muh…manual!”  Quite a first word, right? Honestly, I was shocked that he was even sounding out a word. He fights me tooth and nail when I encourage him to sound out letters in the books we read together. Would you like to know what motivated him?  He was playing Mario Kart Wii and needed to figure out if he was going to put his car into manual or automatic mode.  Yep, that’s one for the baby book.

May your weekend be filled with precious moments and plenty of humor!
