OC Holiday Events: Nov. 30-Dec. 7

Ice kingdoms, Christmas trains, boat parades, tree lightings and more. Here's a rundown of holiday events in and around Orange County. This list will be updated periodically, so check back for more events -- and if there's something we missed, please let us know.

Friday, Nov. 30

• The annual Christmas Train chugs through Irvine Regional Park in Orange on Nov. 30-Dec. 2, Dec. 7-9 and Dec. 14-23. Activities in Santa’s Village include story time with Mrs. Claus and a moon bounce. Irvine Regional Park, 1 Irvine Park Road, Orange.

• The Ice Kingdom at Chill in Long Beach has taken winter to extremes by using 2 million pounds of ice to turn the Queen Mary Dome into an igloo. It’s cold enough that each visitor will be provided with a parka. Massive ice carvings were created by Chinese artisans, some of whom have participated in the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. There’s also an ice slide, ice cave, Santa's Toyland, a Fairytale Castle, a Nativity scene, interfaith Ice Grotto and, of course, an outdoor ice rink. Saturday, Dec. 1

• San Juan Capistrano’s annual tree lighting celebration, on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Historic Town Center Park, will be held in conjunction with other community events. The tree-lighting celebration starts with a 4 p.m. preshow that includes a choir, orchestra and dance performances by local high school students. The main show starts at 5 p.m., and the tree lighting at 5:45. In conjunction with the tree lighting, Mission San Juan Capistrano will be lit up and decorated for Christmas at the Mission, from 5:30-8 p.m. The mission will host musical performances and food vendors, as well as cookie-decorating for kids. In the Los Rios Historic District, there will be free photos with Santa Claus and a free Christmas train ride. A holiday marionette show will be held on Verdugo Street at 6:30 and 7:15 p.m. Zoomars’ petting zoo will offer free admission, but charge fees for hayrides and train rides. Live Nativity performances at Zoomars are at 6:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Historic Town Center Park is at 31852 El Camino Real. Mission San Juan Capistrano is at 26801 Ortega Highway. Zoomars is at 31791 Los Rios St. And the Capistrano Train Depot is at Verdugo/Los Rios Street.

• Heritage Hill Historical Park in Lake Forest will again go old-school for the holidays with its Victorian Christmas, now in its 31st year. On Saturday, Dec. 1, musical performers and local crafts and food vendors will populate the park amid festively decorated historical buildings. Families can join in with hands-on activities, including candle-dipping, butter-churning and Victorian-inspired crafts. Mrs. Claus will participate in cookie-decorating. • The city of San Clemente and Casa Romantica are teaming for a day of cold and warmth. On Saturday, Dec. 1, from 2-5 p.m., the Community Center will have a snow hill for sledding, along with cookie decorating, hot chocolate and crafts, a visit from Santa, a candy cane factory and "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Revelers will follow the bells to Casa Romantica’s Christmas at the Casa. • Free horse-drawn carriage rides, carolers and holiday films at ExplorOcean highlight Christmas at the Beach from 2-6 p.m. at Balboa Village in Newport Beach. ExplorOcean/Newport Harbor Nautical Museum, 600 E. Bay Ave., Newport Beach.

• Musical selections at Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano at the Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa include Feliz Navidad and Noche de Paz. 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa.

• The Sawdust Art Festival’s 22nd Annual Winter Fantasy, “Art for the Holidays,” continues in Laguna Beach on weekends through Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Exhibitors will create, display and sell original creations that include jewelry, clothing, paintings, woodwork and blown glass. 935 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach.

Sunday, Dec. 2

• The Circle in Old Towne Orange will be blocked off from traffic for the city's annual tree lighting and candlelight procession. The preliminaries start at 3:30 p.m. with photo opportunities with Santa, carnival games, a moon bounce and crafts, as well as food sold by community nonprofits. The main show starts at 5:15 p.m. with the lighting of the tree and music by a 350-voice choir and 60-piece orchestra. Chapman Avenue and Glassell Street.

Saturday, Dec. 8

• The annual Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade rides into town with this year's theme "Honoring Our Heroes." The parade will be filled with beautiful equestrian units, patriotic and inspirational military tributes, spirit-filled youth groups, classic auto clubs, talented marching bands, and some of the biggest attractions in the nation! The parade is on Crown Valley Parkway between Nueva Vista and Crown Valley Community Park. The designated drop off area for entries and guests is at the northwest corner of Moulton and Crown Valley Parkway. Kyla Ross is this year's Sports Grand Marshal, she was a member of the dynamic 2012 Olympic Gymnastics Team where at the age of 15, she scored a Gold medal in the Team All-Around Competition.

• The animals at the OC Zoo in Orange get in on the holiday action on Saturday, Dec. 8, at their home in Irvine Regional Park. Human children can attend story time with Mrs. Claus and watch the zoo animals receive treats hidden inside Christmas trees. There will also be seasonally inspired crafts and holiday face-painting. 1 Irvine Park Road, Orange.

• The whole family can decorate a gingerbread house together at a workshop offered twice on Dec. 8 — one at 10 a.m. and another at 12:30 p.m. — in Mission Viejo at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center. The cost is $60 per family. 

• Pacific Symphony presents The Nutcracker for Kids, a 45-minute version of Tchaikovsky's ballet created for children ages 5-11. It's at 10 and 11:30 a.m. at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at the Segestrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa.

• The Metrolink Holiday Toy Express, which delivers entertainment while collecting toys for needy children, makes a stop Saturday, Dec. 8, in San Clemente’s North Beach (7:45 p.m.). Please bring an unwrapped toy.

• More than 1,000 luminarias will light up the buildings and paths at Heritage Hill Historical Park in Lake Forest on Dec. 8 and 9 during the annual Candlelight Walk on the park's 4 acres. Carolers, local musicians, storytellers and flamenco dancers will provide entertainment at the event, which runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. both days. 25151 Serrano Road, Lake Forest.

• All Is Calm, an “ode to peace” that features words and songs drawn from the era of World War I, tells of the spontaneous truce between Allied and German forces in no-man’s land over Christmas 1914. This co-production of Cantus and Theater Latté Da is on tour and stops at Soka University in Aliso Viejo on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. Soka University, 1 University Drive, Aliso Viejo.

A children's choir will perform, and there will be other music, as well as face-painting and dreidel-cookie decorating, and latkes and hot cocoa will be available.
