Spread Your Wings With Flying Fish

The Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center is preparing to open for the season.

The Aliso Viejo Aquatic Center officially opens May 5, but it will be welcoming visitors during Thursday’s open house event at 4 p.m.

Lindsay Norman, program manager for the Aquatic Center, will be on hand spreading the word about the upcoming Swim Program, which begins on April 30. Norman, a former swim coach and swimmer, said there are classes for every level of swimmer—from the children (or adults) too nervous to put their face in the water, to swim team-ready.

“I’m looking forward to the whole package,” she said. “Nobody is water safe, so everyone needs to have the background skills to be water wise.”

Norman remembers one little girl from her coaching days that couldn’t make it across the length of the pool. As the 5-year-old developed her skills, she realized that people would cheer as she tried to swim to the distant edge of the pool. As she swam her little head would pop out of the water every two feet, just so she could hear the cheers. Norman said the crowd got smart after time and held their cheers until she reached the end. The day she finally made it across the full length of the pool, she jumped out of the water fast to soak in the loud applause.

“It was so cute to see her stop to hear the cheers,” Norman said. “When she completed it, the whole pool went crazy for her.”

A variety of classes are available at the Aquatic Center including a Parent and Me class, Learn to Swim and the Swim Team. Check out all the classes and fees here.

By popular demand Coach Dave Stack will be returning this year, Norman said.
