Strongest Winds in 3 Years Bring High Risk of Fire, Forecasters Say

Gusts expected to exceed 60 mph.

The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch in the Southland for very strong winds and low relative humidity in effect from Wednesday evening through Friday afternoon.

Peak sustained winds are expected to exceed 40 mph over much of the area with gusts exceeding 60 mph. The winds will help to maintain low humidity readings, especially over the coasts and valleys, allowing for rapid fire growth if fire ignition occurs, forecasters said. Although the winds should weaken by Friday evening, the potential exists for additional rounds of gusts over the weekend.

Forecasters say the winds will be the highest experienced in the Southland in about three years.

At the same time, there will be a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms beginning Thursday. Forecasters are predicting a 20 percent chance of rain with highs in the mid 60s and overnight lows in the lower 40s.
