Thousands of Eggs 'Gone in Seconds' at Annual Spring Celebration

Event included music, face painting and, of course, Easter egg hunts.

Music, bubbles and the smell of sugary candy and cooking batter filled the air at Grand Park Saturday.

Hundreds of children and parents took part in the annual Spring Celebration and Pancake Breakfast in Aliso Viejo.

Sponsored by the Aliso Viejo Community Association, the celebration included face painting, hoola hoop contests, and of course, Easter egg hunts.

“Aliso Viejo is great about having lots of family events,” said Alyson Cartagena, a city resident who attended the event with her young daughter Alexandria.

“We’ve been counting down the days to the Easter egg hunt," Cartagena said.

The Celebration has been happening annually for at least 16 years, according to Wendy Casar, AVCA recreation director.

Casar said she expected about 1,500 people to attend the event, and added that AVCA staff bought at least 8,000 plastic eggs for the four different egg hunts.

“8,000 eggs gone in seconds,” Casar said.

Money for the pancake breakfast will help support the South County Teen Center.

Sabrina Steckman, 10, said that the pancakes were “really good” but “kind of hard to cut” with her plastic knife.

Charlotte Gannon, 3, who also ate pancakes with her family near the Regal Cinemas, said she was excited to join the celebration on the hill.

“I can’t wait much longer to go up,” Charlotte said.

Eddie Sayers' son Ethan, 5, collected about two dozen plastic eggs.

“It’s a great event,” Sayers said. “This is the first year we’ve done it and we love it."

Running from 9 to 11:30 a.m. the Spring Celebration also included music, bounce houses, bubbles, and the chance for kids to get their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny.

Jerome Yap brought his 2-year-old son Michael to the event for a “little family fun time.”

“This is his first time not being scared of the bunny,” Yap added.

A number of local organizations participated in the event, including: the City of Aliso Viejo, Gymboree, the Mission Viejo Animal Shelter, Regal Cinemas and the Orange County Fire Authority.
