About 45 people took to the streets Sunday morning to raise awareness for juvenile diabetes.
Sponsored by t, the 5K walk kicked off with a speech by Jordan Skolnick, a youth ambassor for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and a member of the fitness club. He was diagnosed with the disease when he was 5.
"Since then, I've had to test my blood sugar 10 times a day and take insulin through a shot five times a day," he said. "It was hard in the beginning because I had to watch what I eat and I had to miss parties and sleepovers.
He added, "It really sucked 'til I got [an insulin] pump. Now I have more freedom to go places. I have not let it slow me down. I still play sports and do what I like to do. "
After the trek, Renaissance fitness director Marcia Volkmann and club operations chief Laurie Smith declared the event a success and promised to make it an annual tradition.
