We Are Americans

What is it that sets America apart from other countries? How has one country been able to save the World in two World Wars, provide aid to numerous other countries, and provided a safe haven for the persecuted?

We are a country of people who think big, who reach (literally) for the stars. We are a world leading country showing the way in innovation, discovery, research and direction. We are a country blessed by God, driven by an ethic of hard work and who view charity as a natural part of our being.

We are a country where a person born to meager means can, by hard work and dedication to a goal, become a leader, a teacher, a healer, a business person, a land owner, a voter and a participant in helping others. We are a people who think big, challenge the impossible, charge into danger, stand by our friends, and share our wealth with nations less blessed than ourselves.

We are a country which does not follow the timid and fearful, with their concerns of safety for in every instance. We understand the danger of not taking action, and the danger of listening to those who caution against all manner of perceived danger in everyday life. We don’t honor the average but we do offer a hand up to those in need. We understand the value of failure and cheer those who refuse to bow to obstacles. We cheer and honor the successful who struggle against all odds to reach their goals. We are dreamers who think big, think progress and think about winning. We dream about setting the stage for our children to achieve more than we can imagine. We dream of mankind exploring the universe. We are a country where each citizen has an equal opportunity to not only succeed, but to learn the lessons of failure. We are a country which seriously dreams of Dr. King’s challenge of judging every person by their character.

Americans of yesterday built department stores like Bergdorf-Goodman in New York, where for years, designers from all over the world brought their newest designs. Americans built U.S. Steel, Boeing Aircraft, the Empire State Building, the largest Navy, the best Air Force, the Peace Corps, the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Big plans, big achievements and super failures, many of which slowed us without ever stopping our moving forward with optimism and energy.

Yet, today the business news talks about China’s economy overtaking the U.S. Economy. We refuse to drill, transport and refine our energy resources which are the envy of the world; and, in doing so, we allow our kids to die in foreign countries, so we can pay excessive prices for imported energy. We allow public unions to dictate their own benefits while driving the cities and states into bankruptcy at the expense of the citizens they were hired to serve. We allow politicians to continue to be elected by dodging public debate and outspending challengers due to restrictive funding rules passed by these same lawmakers. Every generation must fight for liberty and this generation is no different. We’ve sent our children to foreign Countries to fight and represent U.S. interests. Time for us civilians to show the same pride, courage and confidence displayed by this new generation of our military.

How to fix this? It is time to examine ideas on their merits and not on their political agenda. It involves demanding politicians attend town hall meetings and report what they are doing and why. Citizens must demand politicians debate those who would challenge both their records and their ideas. We must get away from campaigns dependent on money and get back to face to face debate viewed by the electorate which will decide who best serves their interests. This country was built with community involvement. Get involved, donate a couple dollars to the people you support, attend one or two community meetings, write letters to your representative and demand performance which fits your desires. It is the American way. This is not a unique time in history. Every generation, every century has problems. Our history celebrates those who come up with answers that best serve the idea of individual rights, freedom of choice and offers equal opportunity.
