Caveat Voter

Slate Mailer Confusion

Election season is among us.  Many political campaigns make use of slate mailers.  These are the pieces of political mail that identify with a cause, political party etc...that list candidates the voter is asked to support.

Frequently, a proposition will be listed and top of the ticket candidates to give the illusion the mailer is, in fact, representing itself in a truthful way.  For example, President Obama could appear on a slate mailer asking voters to vote for a myriad of candidates.  The President's campaign would not have paid for a spot on the mailer.  However, many of the other candidates did.  The cost is typically 5 to 10 cents a household.  These candidates hope that if you are a Democratic voter and voting for Obama; you will vote for them too.

I made some phone calls and found that Trustee Gary Pritchard who is running for reelection will be appearing on a Republican slate.  However, Pritchard is a registered Democrat.  His name will appear below that of the Romney/Ryan ticket.  I don't envision Pritchard voting for Romney but he is hoping Republican voters who do will also vote for him if they think he supports Romney for President.

Many find this kind of campaigning distasteful.  Slate mailers aren't to be trusted.  Those who sell spots on slate mailers note the fine print on their mailers indicate the names on the mailer paid to be on them.  Basically, buyer beware.

In this case, voter beware.
