"Closed On Sunday" Can Be a Good Thing

Eatery Closes To Strengthen Families.

My wife and I love Chick-fil-A, even if it is closed on Sundays. She asked one of the employees why they close and was told so employees could spend time with their families. The corporation itself is known for promoting Christian values.

It reminds me of my childhood. I grew up in a part of the country that had "blue laws." Many businesses were closed on Sunday. You couldn't buy alcohol on Sunday before noon and many counties prohibited alcohol sales completely. Those stores that did open typically didn't before church let out.

Church was a big deal. Most everyone I knew went and those who didn't kept it to themselves. A family lunch following church was a ritual for many. Local eateries were packed. During football season, televisions were wheeled in so everyone could watch the Dallas Cowboys.

I didn't fully appreciate "blue laws" as a kid. I now understand their purpose much more. I doubt that I would support such laws as a government mandate.  I tend to believe the less government the better. However, I do appreciate their intent.

Chick-fil-A is under no obligation to close on Sunday. But bless them for doing so. Their closing is at times a personal hardship for me. My "Chicken Jones" will just have to wait.

So here is a tip of the hat to you, Chick-fil-A, and the way you do business.  And by the way, I will take the number 7 with Polynesian sauce and a fruit cup.
