Local Voices: What Do You Want From Your School Board?

School board priorities to dominate election.

School board elections have been much more heated than Aliso Viejo City Council races.  I don't expect this election year to be any different.  I already know of one candidate with substantial experience who plans on running for our local seat.  My question for readers is—what do you look for in a school board trustee?

Education funding is tight.  Boards will have to prioritize spending and make tough decisions.  My next question is—how would you prioritize spending?

Trustee Bryson recently noted that the prior school board was much more public about its decision-making.  The recent labor negotiation with the teachers' union was done in a much more private manner.  The school board is prohibited from sharing ongoing negotiations but is able to let the public know its priorities.

As noted on the Patch, Trustee Addonizio complained that even though she was a member of the school board she wasn't made privy to negotiations as they progressed.  If this is true, is it the proper way to conduct school board business?

I expect there to be a robust discussion this election season.  Before I forget, there is also a city council election in case you were wondering.
