Capo Unified Candidate Statement: Gary Pritchard

Current board president wants to continue his leadership role.

EDITOR'S NOTE: On consecutive days, Patch is running candidate statements from each Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees candidate who filed one with the county Registrar of Voters. Trustee Area No. 5 covers Aliso Viejo.

NAME: Gary Pritchard

OCCUPATION: Governing Board Member, Capistrano Unified School District, Trustee Area 5

Capistrano Unified needs vision from involved parents who understand what is best for our children. It also needs experienced leadership to handle the tough challenges that face our schools. Since taking office two years ago, I have provided that vision and leadership.

As Capistrano Unified board president, I have restored stability in our district. I have fought to ensure that our tax dollars support safe, well-maintained schools and that our children have top quality teachers.

As a native Californian, I am invested in our community. I have worked with members of our business community and the city of Aliso Viejo to enhance scholarship and educational opportunities throughout our schools. My daughter attends Oak Grove Elementary School, and my wife and I own a home in Aliso Viejo.

I am a father who supports local control and has fought against external challenges and difficulties that continue to threaten our schools locally and across the state. I have the know-how and vision needed to lead Capistrano Unified.

I look forward to continue serving the families and taxpayers of Aliso Viejo. Please join me in keeping Capistrano Unified the best large district in the state!

Vote Gary Pritchard for the Capistrano Unified Board of Trustees.

I was simply pointing out a few facts about the budget and the poor conditions of our Aliso Viejo schools. I didn't "blame" Pritchard for the budget problems, but questioned HIS claim that he has worked to support well-maintained schools - that's simply not the case. I understand about categorical funds and that CUSD doesn't get its "fair share" of education dollars. The world I live in requires balanced budgets and my family has personally felt the effects of an employer having less money than years past and employees were told they would all be taking pay cuts. No one wants to take a paycut, no one is saying that teachers are not the most important factor in education. I'd just like Mr Pritchard to be honest about what he has and has not done in the past 2 years he's been a trustee.
fact checker September 01, 2012 at 03:33 AM
By that logic anyone who contributes to any campaign qualifies.
Capo Parent Too September 01, 2012 at 03:56 PM
So do you think in two years he should have fixed all of the neglect of how many years without the budget to do so? Just asking? And the pool at San Juan Hills and Football Stadium finally got built, they had their first football game at that high school ever last night. Why? Because this board was able to finally settle a lawsuit the "reform" board could not. I think it's a lot to ask in two years to fix years of neglect, it's why I voted to recall the Flemming board in 2006 and 2008 and why so many did.

I believe Mr. Alpay ran for city council in San Clemente....and lost.
Corrine K September 02, 2012 at 07:06 PM
Jane - The Leadership Academy is a separate class from the Disaster Preparedness Certification. Both are offered by the city and can be accessed at cityofalisoviejo.com. As for Perkin's comments and lack of knowledge, I formed my personal opinion from an encounter I had with him at an event, I think it was A Taste of Aliso Viejo, but I am not sure. I also gained some more disturbing examples when he was on the Cox Channel 3 Forum. He used the same tactic of making simply-stated, overly general statements with force and conviction. "I will fight for this city!" but with no clear plan, no explanation of what he meant, and clearly, no knowledge of the city, its voters, and its assets (ie the parks, events, businesses). He is doing it again. I am active in our city as a volunteer and at meetings, and he completely dropped out after he lost the election. If Perkins is somehow secretly involved with municipal matters, I think he should step forward and tell us all. How many council meetings has he attended? How many school board meetings has he attended? What school programs is he involved with? How many schools has he visited? What parent organizations has he met with? What issues has he raised, and what solutions does he propose beyond simply saying he will "FIGHT?" Johnny come lately? I think Perkins is more clearly Johnny Come Rarely.
Lori Walker September 02, 2012 at 09:11 PM
Thanks for your comments, Corrine K. I have not seen Bill Perkins at any Aliso Viejo events nor have I ever heard of him visiting any of our schools. He says he wants to restore class size reduction, How does he plan to do this with no money to go forward with that plan? @ Jane.... it is silly to be "arguing" about my motives and dedication. You do not know me but I will tell you this: I have lived in Aliso Viejo for approximately fifteen years. I raised my children here and they attended public school here. I have attended many community events, some of which my children and / or myself volunteered at. I own my home here. THIS IS MY COMMUNITY AND I LOVE IT HERE. I do admire Gary Pritchard and I am pleased that my fellow teachers support him also. BUT I AM MORE IMPRESSED WITH THE FACT THAT GARY IS AN ALISO VIEJO RESIDENT, PARENT AND THE FACT THAT HE IS VERY INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY EVENTS!!! As a teacher, my union tells me that I do not have to show up for work until Tuesday per contract. Yet, I have been at school nearly every weekday for the past two weeks *(and many other days this summer). I have been preparing for the new school year and could care less that I am not getting paid for those days. In AV, I have attended dance recitals, birthday parties and other special events for my students; all outside of my classroom and work schedule. My motivation is leading me towards what works best for our community and our children. Where do you live?

Poor conditions of Aliso Viejo schools?????
Kathleen K September 03, 2012 at 02:23 AM
Oh great. Now the disgraced, recalled Ken Maddox is trying to drive traffic to his blog posts by posting his link in other articles. Readers beware. This is Ken Maddox, who had repeatedly lied on the Patch, made false accusation, refused to respond to reader comments, hidden behind he fake name changes, and created his own job title of "Policy Analyst" to bloat his already bloated ego. This is the guy that every voting district removed from the CUSD Board.

Touche! yes on 32.
Jane lambson September 04, 2012 at 08:26 PM
I do appreciate the info you have on this candidate. I have heard he does a lot of work with the local Republican Party, and I assume you would agree with this, that isn't the same as getting involved at the civic or school district level. Still, it is hard for me to defend the vote taken whereby the school year will be shortened by 15 days if Prop 30 doesn't pass. Either way, you look at it, the citizens will pay more, either through higher income and sales taxes or more day care costs. I have teacher friends, and they are basically split on this. the old ones want furloughs; the newer ones (for the lack of a better term) would work without the pay. I don't think pritchard, Alpay, Hatton, and Brick completely understand this.
fact checker September 04, 2012 at 09:01 PM
Prop 32 has nothing to do with limiting campaign contributions...especially for corporations and wealthy individuals. It only seeks to limit the way unions can collect funds from their members which are used for campaign contributions. A big difference which seeks to make the playing field more slanted towards big money and away from the middle class.
Jane lambson September 04, 2012 at 09:28 PM
I see that was a veiled slap at the former Trustee, who tried to save CUSD from itself. Of course, the wonderful CUEA didn't like that and $500k later got run out of office. So you can be equipped with the facts, KLM ALSO LIVES IN AV, he is also a parent of a kid that attended a CUSD school until his ex-wife made a unilateral decision to pull him out, probably to embarrass him, and he can be seen around the area. We just saw him the other day in the Town Center. I am sure that your classroom will be a nice environment for your kids. I don't doubt that at all. You seem to be conscientious of your job, and that is to be applauded. As for me, I used to live in AV, and my kids went to school in CUSD before CV ever existed. We moved to Ladera, where my others enrolled, but we moved back to AV just recently. I am well versed in the good teachers in CUSD, and the bad ones as well. I also know who the shop stewards are, who rallies the troops to volunteer a the phone banks, and the like. They are the first on the picket line, and last time they walked out, they were also the major signature gatherers for the recall effort.
Kids First! September 04, 2012 at 09:35 PM
Jane suggested closing one of our fine elementary schools too. Jane Lambson – 5-24-12 Suggesting Palisades become a for-profit charter school as part of the Oxford Prep Academy chain “Based on the waiting list, they should be able to expand. My vote is for Palisades Perkins and his friends want to ruin CUSD. Thank you Gary! RELECT GARY PRITCHARD
P.A.L. September 04, 2012 at 09:46 PM
Jane You are a blantant liar!! I personally know who circulated petitions and I hand viewed and counted every petition submitted to recall Winsten and Maddox ( or Lopez or whoever he wants to call himself this week ). Teachers WERE NOT the major source of work for the recall. You absolutely know nothing about what you are talking about! Only six people ever viewed all of those petitions and you were never even within a mile of those petitions. Is that what you teach your kids - to lie and make up facts!? Shame on you!! Over 75% of the signatures were gathered before the strike even occured. Most of the signatures were gathered by non-teachers and were PARENTS not CUEA members. They did it for free! Not one signature gatherer was paid. The petitions were qualified in 60 days which is the fastest any recall was ever qualified in OC history. The amazing thing about current politics is that idiots like Jane can completely make up false statements and present them as fact and think they can get away with it. JANE is a complete and total LIAR and knows nothing about how the recall was conducted or who worked for those signatures. Winsten once argued that if you catch someone at a lie once the jury can throw out everything else the witness has said. Jane L is a complete LIAR and therefore nothing she says or posts can be trusted.

Capo Mom You are so disgusting. Posting salaries just to intimidate. Lori is worth more than 87K a year. Great job Lori. Capo Mom wouldn't last a day in the classroom and couldn't earn more than $10/hour as a teacher.
fact checker September 04, 2012 at 10:50 PM
Yes and Lori will not be paid for those 15 days so please subtract that percentage from her salary before you look yourself in the mirror, pat yourself on the back, and congratulate yourself for a job well done. She is also not paid for the days she has spent preparing for her class to begin their attendance tomorrow. She will not be paid for the days after school ends for packing up everything for the summer. Take a look at her classroom during the summer and ask yourself whether she deserved to be paid for the effort it took. Thank goodness there are so few small minded parents such as yourself. Have a great year Lori, and enjoy those many supportive parents.
Julie Collier September 05, 2012 at 12:21 AM
Dear P.A.L., Why are you using P.A.L. implying that you are associated with Parents Advocate League? I am the Executive Director and creator of Parents Advocate League and you are not associated in any way with our organization. Our organization does not name call. We respect differences in opinions, and we support ALL students regardless of zip code. In addition, we are not supporting individual candidates in this election. I find it interesting that you are calling people posting different opinions then yourself disgusting and liars when you are hiding behind a false name. Even though I personally do not agree with everything Lori Walker states, I have great respect for her and people like her that post using their real names. How dare you shame others when you can't even support your opinions with your own name. We do not have to agree with each other. Frankly, your arguments and opinions do not stand a chance when you name call, lie, and hide behind fake names. In fact, it shows just how desperate and scared you are.
Capo Parent Too September 05, 2012 at 01:00 AM
WOW, you have some nerve. He wasn't elected until 2010, so what does he have to do with her salary from 2009-2010, that was the "reform" board. You badger people. Teacher's can't comment here with their real names because you do this. All class Capo mom, but it doesn't add one bit to the conversation.
Capo mom September 05, 2012 at 01:24 AM
You are not very careful reader, CP2.
Capo Parent Too September 05, 2012 at 01:46 AM
You want us to consider her salary, what else are you saying? I can read just fine, you are implying that those days won't be a pay cut, but they will. And this salary is relevant how? Regardless, it doesn't excuse your bullying.
Capo mom September 05, 2012 at 02:27 AM
CP2, the salaries listed are for a couple of years. You will note that even though teachers say they took a cut in the 2010-2011 school, Ms Walker's pay actually increased. That is the case for most teachers in CUSD. CUSD teachers are public employees. Their salaries are public information. This is something every teacher knows and agreed to when the chose to work in the public education environment. Teachers in CUSD are the ones who made an issue of their salaries because they went on strike over a pay cut and have increased the number of students in the classroom, demanded extra compensation for it and then significantly decreased the number of days our children will be attending school. They are constantly seeking to have their compensation restored. How will the opportunities missed by our kids be restored? Where is the concern for them? Beyond posting Ms. Walker salary and acknowledging her benefactors, I have made no other comment about this. You and fact checker react so defensively, it is almost as though you are embarrassed by how much an elementary school teacher makes in CUSD. Perhaps given the situation at hand, you should be. But it is a strange situation when discussing the truth with educators is considered bullying.
Capo Parent Too September 05, 2012 at 05:10 AM
Yes, I infer a great deal from your choice of words and language. You say you are just putting things out there, but you add things in your comments. Ms. Walker has Benefactors? She doesn't earn that salary? You post this because it's to garner a reaction, whether you say it is or not. It's to shame people publicly. No one wants to hurt the kids, anyone who puts that forth as an argument is being absurd. But you constantly belittle teachers for doing well, working hard and earning a living and you don't like how the budget was cut. Not a great thing to have to keep cutting the budget and you will then get into other things that on face value we will just not agree on. But you hope to stoke the fires of anger from parents that our teachers make too much money and that they should suffer financially because of the fact that CUSD is getting less money. Larger classes sizes, shorter years and other cuts are not ideal but I do believe that this board is doing what it thinks is best. That's where we fundamentally disagree and how teachers should be treated. It's public information but it's still cruddy behavior.
Sharon Y September 05, 2012 at 02:37 PM
Pritchard has done nothing to protect our students in these bad economic times. He doesn't deserve to be re-elected.
Lori Walker September 16, 2012 at 09:26 PM
Wow... now people are posting my FORMER salary!! I had not checked this page for awhile. Perhaps I should have! :-) Thank you very much to the people that have supported me on this page. I do appreciate it. Just for the record, I also work during the summer, teaching Community Education Classes. Those classes, taught on my own time, actually make money for CUSD. Without that extra work, I would have earned less. And, my salary is based on twenty years experience, my Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and the training that I received over the years. I am certain that I will be making a lot less this coming year but I will do whatever is necessary in this economy. Thank you for your comments, Julie Collier! I have to admit, I appreciate what "P.A.L." said about me! But perhaps that is not the best name to choose since it is a common moniker for your organization.
