Council Adopts Midyear Budget, Worries About Parking Squeeze

After the first six months of this fiscal year, the city is in 'good financial health,' city manager says.

Again this week, City Hall was filled with children and parents, waiting for the City Council meeting to begin.

Girl Scout Troop 374 led the Pledge of Allegiance, and the council recognized the achievements of AYSO Region 889 fall 2010 champions.

After tossing around several ideas and questions about the proposed change to city parking regulations, the council decided to continue the item to the March 16 agenda.

The council discussed the growing problem with a lack of parking, particularly at the various churches in the community. The proposal would grant additional spaces to churches with auxiliary buildings—classrooms, recreation rooms, etc.

The council expressed a concern about the parking problem as a whole in the city, which is "only 9 square miles."

"I shudder to think about what the parking situation is going to look like down the road," said Councilman Donald Garcia. "We are running out of places and spaces."

The council adopted the recommended midyear budget for fiscal year 2010-11 and looked at the city's five-year strategic plan. According to City Manager Mark Pulone, looking at the five-year projection, revenue is expected to grow 1.6 percent.
