Councilman: Green City Initiative Threatens National Sovereignty

The Aliso Viejo City Council will vote Wednesday on the Green Cities Initiative.

The Green City Initiative may become law Wednesday night, but not if Councilman Mike Munzing has his way.

When the council last met March 6, nine people spoke in favor of the plan to cut back the city's carbon footprint. No one spoke against it, but two real estate groups asked for more time to weigh the law.

The initiative is a 104-page policy document two years in the making that sets voluntary environmental goals for Aliso Viejo residents and businesses.

Munzing, who first ran for council in 2012 as the "Conservative Choice," called the initiative a "nightmare." In an e-mail to supporters he said its ideas threaten the sovereignty of the United States:

"This report is a Global Warming Alarmist's dream and must be defeated! This Initiative has taken three years to develop and has cost our city $400,000 thus... far... It is completely filled with lies and misrepresentations and is merely a 'cut and pasted' conglomeration of information taken directly out the United Nation's ICLEI playbook for the destruction of America's ability to produce energy and even survive as a sovereign nation."

Munzing submitted 244 questions to Albert Armijo, the city's planning director, who was largely responsible for drafting the document. Munzing asks how the city defines climate change, how it determines that it is caused by humans, and how the strategies will be tested for success if approved.

The Green City Initiative is the 10th and final item on the Wednesday Aliso Viejo City Council agenda. The council's public session begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? DOES THE CITY'S GREEN EFFORT UNDERMIND NATIONAL SECURITY?
