Fast Facts: First Thumbs Up for Next Year's City Budget

The Aliso Viejo City Council gave unanimous approval to the first version of the city's annual budget Wednesday night. There are likely to be eight new appropriations added to the new budget, as well as another motorcycle deputy and a staff promotion.

The city's two biggest revenue sources, property tax and sales tax, are predicted to increase next year, City Manager Mark Pulone said. He expects about 2 percent more property tax revenue generated in fiscal year 2013-14 totaling $6.27 million. Sales tax revenue is expected to rise 4 percent totaling $4.74 million.

Here are the new programs anticipated for the following budget:

  • The return of Twilight Camp
  • A taxi voucher system for Aliso seniors
  • A reorganization of the city's financial services
  • A comprehensive community parking analysis
  • Money for the new chamber of commerce
  • Membership to the ACC-OC
  • A crossing guard at Chase/Pacific Park near Don Juan Avila Middle School
  • Money for the Discovery Science Center
The city's reserve fund and general fund will both be worth an estimated $25.3 million by the end of the fiscal year, according to the city report.

Editor's Note: While each council member individually consented to approve staff to move forward with the budget as described above, no vote was taken Wednesday night.
