From the Mayor: Community Cup to Benefit Youth

Read the latest message from Mayor Donald Garcia.

A message from the mayor —

"Each year, over 100 golfers take part in the Aliso Viejo Community Cup. It's always a great day of golf, sun and fun at the Aliso Viejo Country Club.

After 18 holes, a dinner and special reception are held to recognize the golfers who won the coveted perpetual Community Cup trophy and made an impression that day. To me, every person who takes part in this event makes a huge impression because he or she is not just doing it for fun. Instead, there's a bigger, more lasting reason for taking part in this event. It's about giving back to our young leaders of tomorrow.

The Aliso Viejo Community Cup, which this year takes place on June 8, is hosted by the Aliso Viejo Community Foundation and benefits the foundation's scholarship program and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley—Aliso Viejo Branch Keystone Leadership program. This leadership program helps youth to overcome the challenges teens face today by promoting character, ethical leadership and good citizenship. The program builds self-confidence, improves social skills and helps teens to develop a positive sense of hope. Kids in the program meet on a regular basis and take minutes, and engage in activities that are preparing them to be responsible citizens.

Since the golf tournament's inception, it has raised about $350,000 to benefit youth programs in town that rely on donations to stay afloat. It doesn't matter if you are a political person—Democrat or Republican—this is one cause that I know you can get behind. This tournament provides an opportunity for residents and businesses to help mold the lives of young kids in our community. Most of us don't have daily interactions with these kids and through this event, we are able to raise enough money to provide benefits that will last many years. If you met any of these young men or women in the Keystone program, you would see how polite and humble they are and how well they interact with adults. You can't help but be proud of them and giving funding helps to support and maintain these types of programs. The funding will also provide ten $1,000 scholarships to deserving Aliso Viejo students to help them get a leg up with college and school costs. Again, this event helps to shape the future of tomorrow.

This year's tournament is even more special because the Aliso Viejo Community Foundation and Boys & Girls Club are partnering with the Wounded Warrior Project to offer opportunities for Marines and wounded warriors to play in the tournament. These are our military heroes who have sacrificed so much for our country. If you cannot play in the tournament this year, I hope you will consider sponsoring our wounded warriors. You will be inspired by their courage and resolve. I know I am.

So if you're a golf fan and even if you're not, the Aliso Viejo Community Cup on Friday, June 8 is certainly an event that you will feel good about supporting.
