Architect: Canyon Vista Needs $7.8 Mil in Upgrades

Canyon Vista Elementary School has $7.78 million in facility needs, a Capistrano Unified School District’s architect has identified.

About half of that, $3.4 million, would go to replacing half of the portable classrooms with permanent facilities. Another $1.5 million of the total would be used to make routine repairs and maintenance the district has postponed, including new paint and repairs to the heating system and paving.

Canyon Vista was designed with small student-teacher ratios in mind and features some classrooms smaller than the 960 square feet required by California law.

On the other hand, Canyon Vista is one of only six Capo Unified campuses that meets California capacity laws for essential facilities, such as classrooms, toilets, drinking fountains, parking, library and administrative space.

The report was created in 2009 and has recently been updated for 2013 pricing. The district is facing $822 million worth of needs and only has about $44 million on hand to address them.

The updated total also includes $576,000 for upgraded technology for students.
