From the Community: Preschool Children Raise Money for Third World Countries

Money raised by Lutheran Church of the Cross Christian Preschool will be used to purchase goats for Third World countries.

Got goats? Lutheran Church of the Cross Christian Preschool in Laguna Woods has a lot of love to share.

Beginning Feb. 1, the preschool children were given small bread-shaped banks along with a “love calendar” to follow throughout the month.  At the end of the month, the children all carried their heavy little banks back to school and presented them at chapel. Mind you, the preschool theme for February was “Jesus Loves Me and Helps Me Grow,” and the Bible verse was “Dear friends, let us love one another” (1 John 4:7).

It took days to open all the banks and count through all of the change—domestic and foreign, as well as monopoly money and Chuck E. Cheese's tokens.  The final count came in at over $1,400. Lutheran Church of the Cross Preschool is sending a check in that amount to the Samaritan’s Purse Organization, which will purchase 20 goats to send to Third World countries.

The children understand that a village can be provided with a lot of food and income from just one goat.  The preschool has been involved in this “love offering” for more than 10 years but has never had such a generous amount to send to Samaritan’s Purse.  We want our young children to learn early that we can share Jesus’ love in many practical ways, such as feeding those less fortunate.

In the fall, the children filled shoe boxes full of supplies for Operation Christmas Child and then again in December brought in more than 120 wrapped gifts to donate to O.C. children through Sparks of Love.  Our preschool families have been so generous, even in these financially difficult times.  We hope the children will develop a Christ-like view of helping others.

“And now I give you a new commandment: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 3:34).
