VIDEO: Close Encounter of a Killer Whale Kind in Dana Point

Dana Wharf Sporthfishing sent in these photos and video of a killer whale caught on video Monday.

After looking at this photo, do you hear the Jaws theme?

Four killer whales appeared to be more than curious on Monday when they decided to check out the folks aboard the Ocean Adventure vessel for a closer look.

According to Donna Kalez, general manager of Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching who owns the vessel, the whales had been following a pod of common dolphin all day, but they didn't attack.

The sighting was made by Capt. Corey Leiser in front of Dana Point's Headlands, she said.

Alisa Schulman Janiger, a killer whale expert, sent the below statement to Kalez and crew, via email about Monday's sightings in Long Beach before they appeared locally:

"Last season this matriline of seven whales (another daughter and her two offspring were absent today) came down from Monterey and visited the LA/Orange County area in September and December 2011, and in January and May 2012; they often brought other matrilines with them. Hopefully these mammal-eating specialists will be around for a few more days before heading back up north. Watch out, all you seals, sea lions, and dolphins between Los Angeles and Dana Point."

Orcas almost never attack people (Sea World trainers might be the only exception). They are called "killer whales" because they like to eat seal pups. I really do wish HuffnPuff post and the Patches that feed it would get their act together and stop trying to sensationalize every single article they publish.

Had this happened off of San Juan Island in Washington State, notonly wold the captain be arrested, but theownerof thecompany would have tarred and feathered.
