Aliso Gymnast Wins Gold Medal

Kyla Ross and the women's team can be seen on TV tonight.

Kyla Ross of Aliso Viejo won her first gold medal of the 2012 Olympic Games as the U.S. women’s gymnastics team dominated the team finals.

The Aliso Viejo resident, who attends Aliso Niguel High School, performed on the balance beam and uneven bars.

The U.S. women captured the gold medal with an overall score of 183.596. Russia scored a 178.530 to take the silver and Romania won the bronze with a score of 176.414.

The 2012 U.S. women's gymnastics team is composed of Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Ross and McKayla Maroney. According to the Olympic format, each team selects three gymnasts for each of the four apparatuses in the final -- balance beam, uneven bars, vault and floor.

Maroney, from Laguna Niguel, was the only U.S. gymnast with just one event, but no one on the team registered a score higher than her 16.233 on vault. That score was the highest of all competitors in the team final. Douglas performed in each of the rotations, Raisman worked the floor and beam, and Wieber was called on for the floor, vault and uneven bars.

The U.S. women’s team has been nicknamed “The Fab Five” in the media, but after the final Maroney told the Associated Press that the quintet would like to be called the "Fierce Five" rather than the "Fab Five."

Now they can be called "Gold Medalists."

McKayla is from Laguna Niguel. I love that these two grew up together doing gymnastics and promised they would go to the Olympics together, they did it. Such amazing news for life long friends. They will have these amazing memories to share forever. So proud of you both and the entire team. Our entire family has loved watching them perform and our Daughter Charlotte wants to try gymnastics. Go Fierce Five, it's a perfect name, they showed such steely confidence and grace under pressure.

Nice catch Heather. You're right, too, about their story. What are the odds that two BFFs from the same neighborhood would be competing for their country? Go Charlotte!

Why is it we only watch gymnastics once every 4 years on National TV in America? It was so emotional and uplifting watching our girls perform last night. Amazing talent and poise.

Congratulations to both girls. Kyla you made our city and our high school and all the kids that attend and have attended very proud as you do your parents and all of us. GO USA and So CAL. My three children that also finished Aliso Niguel are proud of you.
