Guide to July 4th in Aliso Viejo 2013

When do the fireworks go off? Where? And who baked the best apple pie in Aliso Viejo?

What's open? When are the fireworks? Who baked the best apple pie?

Here are some answers to your burning questions this July 4 holiday weekend.

  • The fireworks celebration lasts from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Grand Park, with fireworks being set off at dusk (around 9 p.m.). This is a low-level fireworks display, meaning "fireworks that ignite and fire their effect into the sky directly from the ground," according to the online fireworks glossary.
  • Sure there will be fireworks. But what else is going on that day? The city says to expect "live entertainment, bounce houses, carnival games, arts & crafts, face painting, balloon art and more." Also, expect a homemade apple pie contest.
  • Why can't I drive on Grand Avenue? The city is shutting down Grand Avenue from Vantis to City Lights Drive from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. This applies to all cars and pedestrians.
  • Is the pool open? Absolutely. It's open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There's a special $3 entry fee. And every fourth entry is free with three paid entries. The city is planning free activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Oasis Cafe is running specials all day.
  • OK, the pool is open. Then what's closed? The city council's July 3 meeting is cancelled, and City Hall will be closed Thursday and Friday. Trash and recycling will also be delayed by one day.
