Laguna Hills Half-Marathon Honors Local Marines

The 14th annual Laguna Hills Memorial Day Marathon draws thousands of runners.

A misty morning greeted runners participating the 14th annual City of Laguna Hills Memorial Day Half Marathon, adding to the excitement of many who were trying to beat past times.

For newcomers like Greg Peterson, who was running the 5K with his daughter Isabel, the local race is something he's wanted to do for a while.

"It's a definitely a good morning for a run," Greg said.  "This marine layer is keeping things nice and cool, which is always welcome."

The race, which benefits the city's adopted Marines from the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, hailing from Camp Pendleton were also in attendance for the event—even bringing a Humvee to pace the runners in the beginning.

Along with a 5K, 10K and half-marathon distances, the race also offered kids the chance to participate, making the event one for the whole family.

The route runs through parts of Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel and Laguna Woods.

"Runners in Aliso Viejo are incredibly fortunate as we have access to some of the greatest training grounds possible," said Sheila McDaniel who had to skip out on this year's race due to an injury. "We have fabulous bike trails, dirt trails, hills and the temperature typically cooperates. As a runner it's one of the perfect training grounds."

While she may have been on sideline, McDaniel stayed busy cheering for her husband and son Caleb as they ran the 5K.
