Mayor's Message: Why Summer Camp Matters

The following comes courtesy of Aliso Viejo Mayor Carmen Cave.

Ever since I was young, I have loved summertime. It's all about barbecues, backyard fun, hanging by the pool and spending a week or two at summer camp. Aliso Viejo is a great place to spend the summer. We have parks, trails and open space, an Aquatic Center, movie theater, events and a brand new Summer Camp.

If you are looking for an adventure, consider the Summer Camp at the Aliso Viejo Ranch. This is the first year our city is hosting a camp for youngsters in our community.

Premier Recreation Services, which leads the swim programs at our Aquatic Center, is running the Summer Camp from June 24th through August 29th. Campers ages 4-14 will participate in different activities each week like arts and crafts, hiking, park time, sports, science, group activities and trips to the Aquatic Center.

The Aliso Viejo Ranch, just across from Aliso Viejo Middle School, is home to our annual Founder's Day Fair and is the perfect venue for some outdoor fun. The Summer Camp takes place during the week, and campers can come for two or three days or the entire week. Pricing varies depending on how much time you spend there.

Teens in 9th-12th grades can also enjoy the camp by becoming "Ranch Hands." These "counselors in training" will have the chance to contribute to the their community while developing work experience and life skills through team work, social interaction, time management and teaching opportunities.

I believe that summer programs like our Summer Camp are one of the many building blocks that help to shape us as adults. Summer adventures can enrich lives and add layers to a child's development and enhance his or her independence and love of the outdoors.

You can learn more about the camp on our website at cityofalisoviejo.com. Whatever you choose to do this summer, I hope you make it a happy, healthy and safe season in Aliso Viejo.
