Whiz Kid: Pitching In to Raise Funds for Cancer Awareness

Aliso Viejo Girls Softball League participate in the sport they love while lending a helpful hand.

Who They Are:  All the members of the Gold and Silver All Star teams from the Aliso Viejo Girls Softball League.

Schools and Ages:  These girls are elementary and middle school students ages 9 to 14.  They live in Aliso Viejo and attend our local schools.  They recently completed the spring season in softball and were chosen to compete as all-stars.  The season may have ended recently, but these girls were not quite finished.

How Their Commitment Grew Into Something Bigger:  It began with an idea generated by parents Chad and Yessina Hogancamp.  Chad’s mother, Linda, is a two-time survivor of breast cancer and an inspiration to others who are struggling with the disease.  Chad and Yessina wanted to help women who are dealing with breast cancer, so they created a softball tournament that was held last weekend.  Their idea involved a plan to raise awareness about breast cancer while fundraising for a local nonprofit.  It was a huge success.

The Reason the Girls Deserve Recognition:  The girls who participated shared many of the same attributes.  They were committed, enthusiastic and excited to participate in the sport they love in order to help others.  For the most part, the girls were eager to share with others what they were doing and excited about helping.  Some of these girls played as many as five games over a 48-hour period without a complaint. One girl broke her leg sliding into a base during her first game of the tournament.  Despite the injury, she returned to the tournament, unable to play but happy to cheer for her teammates. More than 50 girls from our city participated in the tournament.  The Aliso Viejo Girls Softball players should be commended for hosting several other teams from other cities and for their great attitude.  It was not a tournament focused on winners (although we did have two amazing winning teams!)   The focus was really about giving back to the community.

Amazing Job by Our AVGS Gold and Silver Teams:  They shared true sportsmanship with everyone this weekend.  They inspired other girls to join in.  Way to go, teams!
