Some schools, such as El Toro, were solidly in the playoff field. Others have to play wild card games today to get into the playoff bracket. One local school is seeded in the top four.
They're longshots to begin with, and their chances of winning a Southern Section baseball title won't be helped by having to play a wild card game today just to get into the first round of the playoffs. But that's the task facing teams such as JSerra, San Clemente and Capistrano Valley in Division 1 and Trabuco Hills and San Juan Hills in Division 2. For them, the do-or-die playoffs begin today, which will put extra strain on pitching rotations that must win five games to win a title once the first round begins on Thursday for some times and Friday for others. The playoff pairings for the seven divisions were released on Monday by the Southern Section office, and there was only one south Orange County team that was seeded into one of the …

Aliso Niguel girl’s lacrosse outlasts Mission Viejo in playoff action and will travel to face top-seeded Los Alamitos today, 4:30, at Laurel Park. Aliso Niguel girl’s lacrosse earned an impressive 11-8 win over Mission Viejo Tuesday night at Wolverine Stadium to advance to the quarterfinals. The Diablos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when midfielder Mikaela Berger picked off an errant pass and scored to put the Diablos ahead. A minute later Sam Leyds scored to increase the Mission lead to two before Wolverine captain Emily Elkins fed her sister Molly for a goal to put Aliso Viejo on the board. McKenna Hayes tied the game before the Wolverines put in two more goals to lead, 4-2. Berger then went downfield and scored with 38 seconds …
The "We Rock We Run Orange County's Kids" running club from Aliso Viejo and Mission Viejo get a pre-OC marathon pep talk from premier distance runner Jonathon Prince.
Jack Bentler never thought he would be a runner, let alone a competitive long distance runner for a club team. The sixth grader at Don Juan Avila Middle School only began serious training for running last September. Now, Jack will be running alongside thousands of others in the OC Marathon, along with his teammates from “We Rock We Run Orange County’s Kids,” an after-school intervention programs for middle and high school students. So how will Jack be feeling when he lines up early Sunday morning to run the 26.2-mile course throughout southcentral Orange County after only eight months of training? Determined, he says. “It’s a really big milestone in my life,” said Jack. “It means I can do whatever I set my mind to do…and I can do so many…

The Pac-5 Division loses the Sunset League but gains the Marmonte League for football playoffs. Sunset teams now face the likes of La Habra and Tustin.
Playoff road trips just got longer. The Southern Section on Wednesday made a huge change in the section's football playoffs, moving the Sunset League out of the Pac-5 Division and replacing it with the Marmonte League. That means South Orange County's southernmost teams could travel to Ventura to play St. Bonaventure. Or vice verse. It likely means that next year's Pac-5 championship will be harder to defend for Santa Margarita Catholic, and harder to win for teams such as Mission Viejo, San Clemente and Tesoro. Those four teams reached the semifinals last season. Santa Margarita will go into the season as the favorite to repeat as champion but will be looking at teams such as Westlake (14-1 in 2011), Westlake Village Oaks Christian (11-3…

The district failed to label Wednesday night's agenda item as a public hearing, so the item is postponed.
Plans to ask the state for permission to increase class sizes in the Capistrano Unified School District beyond allowable maximums were temporarily placed on hold Wednesday night. Although the district advertised the matter as a public hearing, the agenda for the Board of Trustee meeting failed to list it as such. "The board can’t take action on that item tonight. I’m sorry for that mistake," Superintendent Joseph Farley told the board. Julie Hatchel, assistant superintendent of education services, called the mislabeled agenda an oversight. The board was scheduled to hear an item that would have allowed the district to increase class sizes in kindergarten through third grade without facing financial penalties from the state. Class sizes are…
The animal is considered to be the second largest fish, behind the whale shark.
Click here to watch a video of the rare basking shark spotted off the Dana Point Coastline on Wednesday morning. It was taken by Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching's vessel, the Sum Fun during a 3/4 day fishing trip. The basking shark is considered to be the second largest fish, behind the whale shark, according to Dana Wharf's General Manager of Dana Wharf, Donna Kalez. It is a slow moving and generally harmless filter feeder and has anatomical adaptations to filter feeding, such as a greatly enlarged mouth and highly developed gill rakers, according to Wikipedia. This shark is called the "basking" shark because it is most often observed when feeding at the surface and appears to be basking in the warmer water there.
