$18M for Local Company's Root Canal Cleaning Tool

They claim their new device is less painful, less damaging, quicker and more reliable.

A local medical device company has secured $18 million more to bring to trial a device to clean root canals.

With successful trials, Sonendo of Laguna Hills plans to release the Multisonic Ultracleaning System in 2014. They say the device can clean a root canal in five minutes.

"Our goal is to transform endodontics by improving the clinical quality and business performance of practices performing root canal therapy," said Bjarne Bergheim, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sonendo.

The company identifies the following problems with root canal cleaning as it is currently practiced:

  • Painful
  • Labor-intensive
  • High failure rate
  • Removes dentin, weakening the tooth
Sonendo claims to have solved these problems with a new device that uses sound vibrations through a disposable dental handpiece.

Between this year and last, the company has secured $27 million for clinical trials and to bring the device to market, according to an announcement.
