Community Cup Tees Off With More Than 100 Golfers

The 9th Annual Aliso Viejo Community Cup benefits city youth program.

Golfers readied their clubs during the 9th annual Aliso Viejo Community Cup, which benefits the Boys and Girls Club.

The event, which is rooted before cityhood and helped to raise money for Aliso Viejo's application for becoming a city, has focused its goals to offer support to youth programs and scholarships to local student.

“Once we incorporated we thought because it was such a good community event that we would work with the Aliso Viejo Community Foundation and raise money for programs and other things in the city,” Councilmember Carmen Cave said. “Plus, It’s a great day to be out—you get to see people you haven’t seen for a while and it’s for a good cause on a great course. “

For many of the golfers the perks of playing is kicked up a notch with the addition of raffle prizes and games such as the longest drive, closest tee-off and poker.

“This event has been the charity of choice for us,” said Capistrano Boys and Girls Club Director James Littlejohn. “ The support from the city along with all the golfers and sponsors means a great deal to our organization and helps us provide after school programs and positive services to kids in Aliso Viejo.”

“It’s another day in paradise,” said Aliso Viejo Community Foundation President Robert Bunyan, adding that the proceeds from today’s event not only benefits the Boys and Girls Club, but that 10 scholarships, worth $1,200 each, were also awarded on Monday, to students from Aliso Niguel High School.

This year’s golf cup also invited Marines from 1st battalion 11th Marines out of Camp Pendleton.

“I’m hoping on behalf of the Boys and Girls Club that we raise more money than we did last year,” Mayor Donald Garcia said.

The event has raised more than $350,000 since it’s inception.
