10 Things You Might Not Know About Aliso Viejo

Celebrate Aliso Viejo's birthday with 10 fun facts about the city.

Aliso Viejo turns 10 years old today. The city was incorporated July 1, 2001. To celebrate the special day, here are some facts and figures you may not know about the city.

  1. In 2009 Forbes.com named Aliso Viejo one of the top 25 cities to live well.
  2. There are 21 parks within the 6 square miles that make up Aliso Viejo.
  3. The city was declared a "walkable community" by the City Council in 2007 in an "effort to increase awareness, community and business participation and foster healthy families and community activities."
  4. A resident created the city's slogan, "Aliso Viejo—Experience It All."
  5. Aliso Viejo's motto is  “Live, Work, Learn, Shop and Play.” 
  6. Every resident in Aliso Viejo lives within three miles of Town Center. 
  7. Aliso Viejo's current mayor, Carmen Cave, also served as mayor in 2001—the year the city was incorporated.
  8. Aliso Viejo is Orange County's 34th city.
  9. Aliso Niguel High School was rated number 214th in Newsweek's top 500 schools list.
  10. The fossils of an 11-million-year-old paleoparadoxiid, a creature resembling a hippopotamus, were discovered in Aliso Viejo.
