Class Tackles Catholic 'Hot Potatoes'

Free lecture series will cover 20 controversial topics, including abortion, priestly celibacy and homosexuality.

Catholic teachings that "boggle the faithful and upset many in secular society" will be explored and dissected in a four-week lecture series at in Aliso Viejo.

The free classes, titled "20 Hot Potatoes Catholics are Afraid to Touch," will examine various "social issues, theological misunderstandings and Catholic quirks" in light of church history, Vatican II documents and modern scholarship.

The sessions, which also include small-group sharings, will be taught by Shawn Wehan, the parish's adult education coordinator.

Part 1 of the series kicks off at 7 p.m. Monday, and repeats at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Parts 2 through 4 follow the same Monday-evening-or-Tuesday-morning pattern on Aug. 29 and 30, Sept. 12 and 13, and Sept. 19 and 20.
