Parent Taxing Association

PTA endorses tax hike

Plenty of money is being spent on television ads for the propositions on our November ballot.  The California Parent Teachers Association figures prominently in those for Proposition 38.

From the Ballot Pedia website:

Proposition 38, a State Income Tax Increase to Support Public Education, is on the November 6, 2012 ballot in California as an initiated state statute.[1]

Supporters of Proposition 38 refer to it as the "Our Children, Our Future: Local Schools and Early Education Investment Act".

If enacted, Proposition 38 will:

  • Increase state income tax rates for most Californians, resulting in increased revenues to the state of about $10 billion a year.
  • The state income tax increase would end after 12 years, unless voters reauthorize it.
  • Earmark most of the new revenue of $10 billion for public school districts and early childhood development programs.

It is interesting to note the California Teachers Association is supporting Proposition 30 which is Governor Brown's rival tax increase measure.

Many Californians have been negatively impacted by our state's economy.  California has some of the highest taxes in the nation.  Those of us in Aliso Viejo also pay mello roos.

Yes, our schools have been hard hit by budget cuts.  Proposition 98 provides our schools roughly 40 percent of the state budget.  A smaller state budget means a smaller school budget.  The state relies heavily on our state income tax for revenue.  People are earning less so the state gets less.  Pretty simple.

A famous bank robber was asked why he robbed banks.  He responded, "Because that's where the money is."  Word to the PTA.  The money isn't in the pockets of Californians.  Many parts of our state still have double digit unemployment.

It would be interesting to learn where Aliso Viejo's school board candidates are on these two ballot measures.
