Gil Torrez Named Deputy of the Year

The 15-year sheriff's veteran will be honored during the Jan. 18 city council meeting.

Gil Torrez, of the Orange County Sheriff's Department, has been named the 2011 Aliso Viejo Deputy of the Year for his work and dedication to the community.

Torrez, a 15-year sheriff's veteran, began serving the city of Aliso Viejo in June of 2004. Torrez serves as the Aliso Viejo Terrorism Liaison Officer and has served twice as a Selected Enforcement Team member. He was also awarded the Medal of Lifesaving after saving a child who nearly drowned.

Before beginning his career with the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Torrez joined the United States Marine Corps in 1990. He served four years.

"Gil has been committed to public service for most of his life," said Lt. Bob Osborne, chief of Aliso Viejo Police Services. "To Gil, the words service, duty and honor are more than just words ... they are a way of life."

Torrez will be honored during the Jan. 18 city council meeting.
