Minivan Crashes Into Gas Main in Aliso Viejo
A quick-thinking resident turned off a gas line, so evacuation of a nearby building was unneeded, official says.
A minivan crashed into an exposed gas line along Fuchsia Place in Aliso Viejo Wednesday afternoon, an Orange County Sheriff's Department official said.
Witnesses reported that a vehicle hit a pipe near apartments about 2:10 p.m., according to Aliso Viejo City Administrative Sgt. David Haldeman.
Propane gas started to vent into the area, but a resident turned off the gas main.

Initially, as a precaution, emergency services proposed evacuating a nearby building. However, Haldeman said, because of the actions of the unknown person, an evacuation was not required.
"John Q. Public went and did a great job," Haldeman said.

At least one caller heard a "large explosion," but investigations revealed no sign of a blast, Haldeman said.
The female driver is in good condition but was taken to a local hospital for observation.
Authorities found no sign of alcohol use.
