City Council Approves Music Video Showcasing Community

PeopleStar FilmWorks will produce the "LipDub" video with help from the community, and other news from the regular City Council meeting.

Aliso Viejo is going MTV.

Well, not quite. But on Wednesday evening, the City Council voted 5-0 to authorize City Manager Mark Pulone to enter an agreement for the production of a music video that will highlight and showcase the community, businesses and facilities in the City of Aliso Viejo.

The video, called a “LipDub,” short for lip-synch dubbing, will be filmed on Aug. 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the area near City Hall, Grand Park, and Town Center by PeopleStar FilmWorks. The media/news/publishing company is a local outfit, located on the second floor of City Hall at 12 Journey, Suite 280.

The video is expected to run 9-10 minutes, according to Pulone, and cost roughly $10,000. It will be fully-funded by sponsors and no cost to the city or taxpayers. However, there will be a minor cost of $1,500 for street closures during the filming.

“We’re excited about it,” Pulone told council members.

Chip and Kim McAllister, owners of PeopleStar FilmWorks, are Orange County residents who won the “Amazing Race” reality show in 2004. They produced a similar 9-minute video for Grand Rapids, Mich., in which a marching band, local musicians, football players and hundreds of others danced in the streets while lip-synching to Don McClean’s classic song “American Pie.” The video was uploaded on YouTube in May 2011 and has received 4.8 million views.  In other City Council action:

  • A resolution was adopted 5-0 that will allow a new 6-foot antenna for wireless communication to be mounted on the roof of the Coast Hills Community Church. The original proposal, which was rejected in January 2012, called for 8-foot antennas, which council members thought was too obtrusive. The new antennas will be enclosed in screening boxes with score-lines that are not readily apparent from below.
  • A second amendment was approved 5-0 that will give the Boys and Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley $7,500 for teen programs for fiscal year 2012-13. The teen program has been growing steadily over the years and the kids who regularly attend the clubs are getting older. Mayor Donald Garcia did request that a presentation be made in the future on the teen program
  • In the most humorous moment of the meeting, Councilmember Philip Tsunoda nominated Mayor Garcia as the voting delegate and Mayor Pro-Tem William Phillips as first alternate for the League of California Cities Annual Conference, Sept. 5-7 in San Diego. Undaunted, Mayor Garcia then countered by nominating Councilmembers Carmen Cave and Phillips for those roles, respectively. By a 4-1 vote, the mayor won.

The next regular City Council meeting will be Aug. 1.
