New 'Fierce Five' Will Battle for City Council Seats

Five candidates, including three incumbents, have filed nomination papers for three City Council seats up for grabs this November in Aliso Viejo.

Five local residents have thrown their hats into the ring and officially filed nomination papers and the candidate's packet to run for the Aliso Viejo City Council this November when three seats are up for grabs.

Of the five, three are current City Council members. The two newcomers are Mike Munzing, a mortgage broker, and Ross Chun, the founder and CEO of Eco-Stride, LLC, in Aliso Viejo.

All three incumbents are eligible for re-election since there are no term limits in Aliso Viejo. Council members are elected to four-year terms.

One of the incumbents is Donald Garcia, a practicing attorney, who has served on the council since being appointed by the City Council on March 1, 2007. Garcia was selected by the council to serve as Mayor of Aliso Viejo on December 7, 2011, and served previously as Mayor in 2009.

William "Bill" Phillips was selected by his colleagues to serve as Mayor Pro Tem during the Council's December 7, 2011 meeting. He served as the City's third Mayor in 2004 and served again in 2008.

The other incumbent is Greg Ficke, a founding father of Aliso Viejo, who was elected to serve on the City's first City Council when Aliso Viejo incorporated on July 1, 2001. He was re-elected in 2004 and was appointed to the post in August 2008 after running unopposed for the four-year term.

The election is Tuesday, Nov. 6.
