43 Aliso Viejo Teachers Face Layoffs

Faculty from seven Aliso Viejo schools could be gone next year. Here's a list of who's on the block.

Layoff letters were given to 43 teachers, spread across seven schools, in Aliso Viejo on March 1.

Schools throughout the will be affected by the layoffs. San Juan Hills High stands to lose 25 teachers, the most of any comprehensive high school in the district. and High are close behind with 24 teachers each on the list.

Of the 43 Aliso Viejo teachers, 11 teach special education classes. Each school affected, except for Don Juan Avila Elementary, has at least one special education instructor on the layoff list.

The teachers fall into three categories: Permanent, meaning they have tenure; rehired/temp, which means they were previously either permanent or in a probationary period and laid off, then later rehired as a temporary employee; and temporary, meaning they work on one-year contracts.
