Greeted by a table of cookies and snacks in the community room of the , members of ’s National Honor Society arrive ready to help their fellow students.

Every Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. members of the society tutor students from their school—or on the slower days, they do their own homework.

“No one wants to do their homework when they get home anyway,” said Desiree Macchia, 17.

Macchia, a senior at ANHS, has been a member of the society since her sophomore year. This year she is one of the vice presidents of the society. There are four vice presidents who are each in charge of a certain group of members.

There are currently 50-60 members of the society, Macchia said, consisting of seniors, juniors and the recently inducted sophomores. Freshman must wait a year before applying.

To be a member of the National Honor Society, students must hold a 4.0 grade point average, a certain amount of extra curricular activities and community service hours.

Macchia said most of the tutors are pretty well rounded, but if there is ever a student with a harder homework assignment or question, the group joins forces to find the answer.

ANHS senior and President of the society, Allison Kerins, 18, said she loves tutoring geometry. Getting a hard proof and helping the student find its solution always makes her happy, she said.

“I knew I was big into community service and I really enjoyed finding a way to help others,” said Kerins.
